Hot Off The Press: February 2026

Today’s post is sponsored by Jenn Naughton and The Bookish Society!

Every parent wants to raise a reader but a staggering number of adults haven’t read a book since graduating from high school. Too often reading in school is conflated with books written by dead dudes, waxing on about topics kids find irrelevant and (ahem), boring. What’s to love about reading if it doesn’t excite and engage?

At The Bookish Society we aim to change the trajectory of our juvenile and young adult readers. We know that reading can and should be a lifelong passion. As such, we do what we know works to raise readers and not just English class students — provide irresistible books that kids actually want to read, along with a community of readers to support, encourage and engage one another. Whether it’s digging into topics and issues kids want to know more about, as we do in in our Women’s Studies Class, or treating the middle schooler’s obsession with graphic novels as a worthy passion in our Tween Graphic Novel Round Table, or enjoying getting lost in another world in the plethora of middle grade fantasy in our Advanced Kids Round Table, there’s something at The Bookish Society that will appeal to every kid.

Let us be part of your child’s journey to becoming a reader for life.

From USA Today bestselling author Christen Randall comes a cozy, “authentic, and affirming” (Kirkus Reviews, starred review) queer romance about self-discovery, finding your person, and carving out a space for yourself in unexpected places, perfect for fans of Heartstopper, Felix Ever After, and Julie Murphy.

Mal Flowers expected senior year fall to be full of cozy sweaters, good coffee, and copyediting. As the new editor-in-chief of their school’s literary magazine, they just want to follow The Plan to graduate and get out of their small midwestern town — a place where, as a broke, fat, queer person with ADHD, they’ve never really fit in. But when budget cuts result in the lit mag’s cancellation, Mal is suddenly left scrambling for something to replace it.

That is, until Emerson Pike — who also has ADHD but is loud, confident, and Mal’s complete opposite — suggests the staff go rogue and create a zine instead. Which would be cool, except that making and selling contraband isn’t exactly what Mal envisioned listing as the extracurricular activity on their college application. A zine would be unofficial, unapproved, and definitely not in The Plan.

But a zine is also a good way to spend more time with Emerson, whose playful banter and bad jokes Mal can’t seem to get enough of. And maybe, with a group of new friends, the back of the charming coffee shop where Emerson works could be somewhere Mal does belong. Because breaking the rules with Emerson — and flirting with her over coffee — is fun.

Maybe The Plan isn’t the only way to find happiness, but can Mal let go of something they’ve depended on for so long?

Love is a wild ride. Hold on.

When life lassoes Josie and Shawn back together three years after their dreamy first date, their second chance at love is anything but easy. A big-hearted rodeo romance set in Houston, Texas, by the critically acclaimed Liara Tamani, author of What She Missed, All The Things We Never Knew, and Calling My Name. This bold first-love story is for fans of Nothing Like The Movies and Highly Suspicious and Unfairly Cute.

This ain’t Josie’s first rodeo. Her parents own several fancy restaurants in Houston, and they just opened a new one right outside the stadium. Josie is expected to stay inside the restaurant and help, and maybe take over their growing empire one day, but that isn’t what Josie wants. She’d rather be at the rodeo itself than in a high-end restaurant next to it. Or eating funnel cakes and Texas-sized corn dogs at the carnival on the grounds. Or better yet, riding her horse at her grandparents’ ranch, the very place her mom wants to sell.

It ain’t Shawn’s first rodeo either. He’s been riding bulls since his mom died, doing everything he can to live up to his rodeo-champion stepfather’s sky-high expectations. But as Shawn’s stardom rises, so do tensions in their relationship. His stepfather’s drinking and gambling problems sure don’t help.

After one unforgettable night leaves Josie and Shawn wanting nothing but each other, their lives become entwined in increasingly complex ways. Can they save Josie’s family land? Or will Shawn’s stepfather and his shady plan be the ranch’s ruin? Will one wrong move cost them everything? Rodeo after rodeo, year after year, can Josie and Shawn keep their hearts open through the secrets, twists, and turns?

This Ain’t Our First Rodeo is a contemporary western love story full of bulls, brawls, and horses. It’s a tender second chance cowboy romance about family, friendship, mistakes, and the blessings of choosing to love anyway. Black cowboys and cowgirls like Josie and Shawn have long helped shape the American West — a legacy that shines in Liara Tamani’s storytelling. Her writing is quick-witted, swoony, and authentic, with characters who are easy to love and hard to forget.

In this “thoughtful, personal, and deeply relevant” (Booklist, starred review) graphic novel based on a true story, a group of high schoolers in Chicago work to overturn the system-wide ban of Marjane Satrapi’s Persepolis.

It starts as an update at one Chicago high school: copies of a certain book are no longer allowed in the classrooms or the library. But it’s not just one high school — it’s all Chicago public schools. Not even the principals know why this is happening; they just know they must comply with the order. One thing is clear: The book, which tells a story of oppression, survival, and resistance against authoritarian power, is seen as a threat, dangerous enough to ban. One other thing is clear: Some of the students aren’t going to let this go without resistance of their own.

As the extent of the ban becomes known, the students rise up. They organize a school-wide walkout and library sit-in. They publicize the banning in every forum they can: social media, the press, classes, clubs, the school paper. And most of all, they get everyone they know to read the book: Persepolis by Marjane Satrapi.

Told from multiple perspectives, based on extensive interviews with the real-life students and teachers who were affected, and written by the librarian who exposed key information about the Chicago Public Schools censorship decision, Wake Now In The Fire is a fictionalized account of a true event that galvanized a community. With illustrations by Alex Award-winner AJ Dungo that perfectly capture the everyday joys, heartbreak, and stresses of high school, this graphic novel is an inspiring portrayal of student activism taking on one of the most urgent issues of our time, and a passionate reminder of why protecting the books we love matters.

A student finds herself accidentally betrothed to a demon — and investigating his connection to the magical irregularities plaguing her city — in this cozy, whimsical YA romantasy.

As a scholarship student at the magical Lyceum, Naomi would rather focus on deciphering ancient scrolls than dating. Especially since the only boys asking her out are less interested in a night in Naomi’s company than an introduction to her influential aunt.

So Naomi devises an excuse to turn down her persistent suitors: She claims to be betrothed to a demon.

Her story works perfectly. Until she arrives home one night and finds the demon Daziel lounging in her rooms, insisting he’s her betrothed. Naomi knows he’s lying — after all, the betrothal was never real — but the gorgeous and infuriating demon is surprisingly resistant to her banishing spells. And with his penchant for baking and home décor, it’s not so bad having him around.

Besides, she has other worries — like the ancient scroll she’s trying to translate, and the way the city’s magic has become suddenly unstable. But the more Naomi learns about the scroll, and the more she gets to know Daziel, the more it seems like she might be at the center of something bigger than she could have imagined.

Perfect for fans of fairy-tale reinventions, cosplay, and pop-culture nerdom, this officially licensed Lady Lovely Locks story proves that, sometimes, you have to become the hero of your own story.

Sixteen-year-old Leigh Carroll has been through it — when she lost her mom as a baby, she and her dad had to move to a small apartment in Philadelphia where they are scraping by. Leigh has an afterschool job at a hardware store and her dad works nights, so they never see each other. Despite everything, Leigh has been able to maintain her signature snark and has found an escape through something she’d never expected…cosplay.

It’s in this pursuit where Leigh’s life takes a turn for the supernatural — when she decides to build a costume based on a dated book series called Lady Lovely Locks. It’s about a princess of the same name who, on the surface, wears frumpy dresses, lives in a magical castle, rides a horse named “Silky Mane,” and has rainbow hair infested with long-tailed rodents called “Pixietails.”

Leigh finds a way to re-interpret this character for the 2020s and has everything she needs, except the rainbow-streaked hair. At a comic convention, she meets a mysterious old woman selling what appears to be an authentic, vintage Lady Lovely Locks wig. When Leigh gets home and puts it on, she finds herself magically transported to Lovely Locks kingdom. And, somehow, she now IS Lady Lovely Locks. But it isn’t until she finds a painting of her mom hanging in the walls of a castle that she realizes more than magic has brought her here…it’s fate.

A fascinating historical novel-in-verse for young adults capturing the discoveries of Eunice Foote, a remarkable woman in science WAY ahead of her time.

Happiness needs to be earned in the face of impossible odds, or there’s no beauty in it.

Forcibly estranged from their father by their manipulative grandfather, Dorian feels trapped in the life that has been decided for them.

Then one night they sneak out of their grandfather’s house, they meet a sweet and talented young painter named Basil, who immediately recognizes Dorian as his new muse. Dorian is further elated when Basil introduces them to the world of molly houses and drag performers – they’ve never seen such joyful variety of humanity and gender expression. But, as the barrier between the London they know and the one they’re discovering begins to crumble, Dorian must face the fact that freedom and safety do not come hand in hand.

They push away those closest to them, surrounding themself instead with vapid courtiers and decadent socialites. And as Dorian’s spiral of self-loathing deepens, something strange happens ― Basil’s portrait of them begins to change. Their smile becomes a little sharper, the glint in their eyes a little colder.

Dorian will have to choose ― embrace the wickedness within and allow themself to become what they were always meant to be, or dare to try for something far more fragile and dangerous: a life of their own making.

On the first anniversary of a tragic fire at their high school, seven teenagers jump at the chance to attend a luxury desert retreat. But when they’re left at a rundown abandoned motel and a sinister text message accuses them of complicity in the fire, they realize someone is playing a deadly game of revenge.

The rules? Every hour, one of them must sacrifice themselves, leaving the motel to be killed, until only one survivor remains. Otherwise… they all die.

As the countdown begins, the stranded must answer the questions: when everyone’s guilty, who deserves to live? Who deserves to die?

With time running out, can they work together to uncover who’s running the game before the bodies pile up? Or will it be survival of the fittest?

From New York Times bestselling author and renowned creator Joey Graceffa comes a pulse-pounding YA fantasy where witches hunt witches, magic has a price, and sisterhood is the only thing standing between light and darkness.

Welcome to the coven.

Each month, a Zodiac Witch is born, her magic written by the stars.

Ophelia and Serena — twin sisters born on the cusp of Pisces and Aries — are trapped in the cold confines of an orphanage until fate rips them from obscurity. Suddenly, they are invited into The Twelve, a powerful coven. To join, they must swear to hunt Dark Witches, creatures of spectral beauty and razor-sharp teeth who survive by siphoning magic from young witches.

On a secret island, protected by their new sisters, Ophelia and Serena train to use their powers. Serena commands Lightning, raw and untamed. Ophelia wields Water, quiet and waiting. Their paths shift — one chasing power, the other resisting — as the sisters find themselves caught between two destinies. Some choices can never be undone but they must decide, because magic does not wait, and the darkness is coming for them in ways they could never imagine. After all, the stars never shine without casting shadows.
