Even as I enter my sixth month of sheltering-in-place, I continued to be overwhelmed and anxious at the scope of the pandemic and the thought of how much our lives have and will continue to change in the weeks, months, and years to come as a result. The world can feel like a really scary place right now, and so much feels uncertain and out of our control. As difficult as I often find our current reality, however, I know there are others who likely feel even more lost and alone, including today’s youth. With everything from Halloween to the coming school year in question, I can’t begin to imagine how difficult it must be to be a child or young adult navigating the world right now.
While I know there’s likely little I can do to make their lives easier, I tried to think of small ways I could lend a hand and use what I know and love – books and reading – to bring a little sunshine and relief. With that in mind, I thought it might be fun (and hopefully helpful!) to compile a list of adventure-filled middle grade books that could help young readers escape to magical and exciting new worlds, even if only for a short while. Books have helped me through some of my darkest moments, offering me an escape and distraction when I needed it most of all, and my hope is that one of the books in the list below might offer young readers that respite, too.
