Cover Reveal: One Of Us Is Lying by Karen McManus

Hi everyone! Today’s a bit of a busy day here on Pop! Goes The Reader as, in addition to introducing the Raise Your Voice 2016 event that will be taking place throughout the month of October, I also have the immense pleasure of hosting the exclusive cover reveal for Karen McManus’s upcoming 2017 young adult debut, One Of Us Is Lying! Coming to a bookstore and library near you May 30, 2017 from Delacorte Press, One Of Us Is Lying is a thrilling mystery described as “The Breakfast Club meets Pretty Little Liars” in which five students enter detention, but only four will make it out alive. I’ve been absolutely captivated by this story every since I first learned of it back in July, and I couldn’t be more excited to share a little bit more about it on the blog today. Not only will One Of Us Is Lying be published in thirteen territories outside of the United States, it also has the distinction of being included in the Publisher Weekly’s Spring 2017 Children’s Sneak Preview! Please read on to learn more about this thrilling young adult debut, including an exclusive cover reveal, a personal note from the author about the story’s origins and an opportunity to win an advance reader copy of One Of Us Is Lying!

I’ve always been fascinated by locked-door mysteries. So when I started thinking about doing a Breakfast Club update, that’s where my mind went — What if five students walked into detention that day, but only four came out? I wanted to explore what happens when lives intersect during and after a shocking event, and everyone involved has something to hide. At first glance all four main characters are a “type,” but once layers start peeling away, they’re more complicated than they seem.

I love how the cover gets so much of that across. All the characters are connected, yet separate. Gossip plays a big part in the book, and the title reminds me of a red Sharpie scrawled across someone’s locker. And, of course, everyone’s behind a mask. It keeps you guessing, and I hope the book will too!

The Breakfast Club meets Pretty Little Liars, One Of Us Is Lying is the story of what happens when five strangers walk into detention and only four walk out alive. Everyone is a suspect, and everyone has something to hide.

Pay close attention and you might solve this:

On Monday afternoon, five students at Bayview High walk into detention.
Bronwyn, the brain, is Yale-bound and never breaks a rule.
Addy, the beauty, is the picture-perfect homecoming princess.
Nate, the criminal, is already on probation for dealing.
Cooper, the athlete, is the all-star baseball pitcher.
And Simon, the outcast, is the creator of Bayview High’s notorious gossip app.

Only, Simon never makes it out of that classroom alive. And according to investigators, his death wasn’t an accident. He died on a Monday. But that Tuesday, he’d planned to post juicy reveals about all four of his high-profile classmates. Now, all four of them are suspects in his murder. Are they guilty? Or are they the perfect patsies for a killer who’s still on the loose?

They all have a motive. They all have something to hide. They all have a history with Simon. And one of them is definitely lying.

As an extra, exciting bonus, Karen has been kind enough to offer one lucky reader the chance to win a advance reader copy of One Of Us Is Lying! 1. I don’t think I’ve ever read any locked-door mysteries, but The Breakfast Club is one of my favorites. I love all the characters, but probably Bender is my favorite.

Thanks for the giveaway! This book sounds amazing!

  2. The Breakfast Club is one of my favorite movies, I love all the characters but, I guess Claire and Allison were my favorites, each relatable for me in very different ways.

  3. My favorite locked door mysteries have to be Murder on the Orient Express and And Then There Were None by Agatha Christie. And I hate to say but I never likes The Breakfast Club, so I don’t have a favorite character.

  4. I am so excited for this book!! The cover is gorgeous and I’m so ready to read it. Congratulations, Karen!

  5. Locked door mystery + the Breakfast Club – great combination. Sounds like a great read and interesting cover!
