I’ve always been fascinated by locked-door mysteries. So when I started thinking about doing a Breakfast Club update, that’s where my mind went — What if five students walked into detention that day, but only four came out? I wanted to explore what happens when lives intersect during and after a shocking event, and everyone involved has something to hide. At first glance all four main characters are a “type,” but once layers start peeling away, they’re more complicated than they seem.

I love how the cover gets so much of that across. All the characters are connected, yet separate. Gossip plays a big part in the book, and the title reminds me of a red Sharpie scrawled across someone’s locker. And, of course, everyone’s behind a mask. It keeps you guessing, and I hope the book will too!
