Breaking up is hard to do, especially when it’s with your best friend. Can these two ex-besties survive summer camp together?

Maddie and Chloe have always been best friends, until last year, when Chloe’s popularity and budding fame as an actor left Maddie in the dust one too many times. Their friendship is over, and they’re both ready to move on.

But when the girls arrive at summer camp, they discover that the universe isn’t ready to let go of this friendship just yet: They’re cabinmates, and each of them has to spend the summer with her ex–best friend. Is it time to try again, or are they doomed to drift apart for good?

Do! Judge A Book By Its Cover is a regular feature on Pop! Goes The Reader in which I pay tribute to some of the best and brightest the publishing world has to offer in the way of book cover design.

Middle grade book covers have always held a special place in my heart for their diversity, creativity and vibrancy and I think the collection of covers below perfectly encapsulate why. The movement on Make A Move, Sunny Park!, the joy on Cut Loose!, the warmth on Something Like Home, the wonder on Farther Than The Moon – There are so many ways to define what makes a ‘good’ book cover, but for me, the most important thing is that it evokes something and compels me to learn more about the book in question. I have so much respect for the artistry displayed in the book covers below and I hope you’ll be able to discover at least one new favourite amongst them.

Please Note: As always, I’ve done my best to credit the designers and artists responsible for the stunning covers below, but was unable to find this information for a number of those listed. If you know of an uncredited designer and/or artist responsible for any of these book covers or if I’ve credited someone incorrectly, please let me know and I would be happy to include proper attribution in this post. Their work is lovely and important and deserves attribution.

Hi! I’m Jen! I’m a thirty-something introvert who loves nothing more than the cozy comfort of home and snuggling my two rescue cats, Pepper and Pancakes. I also enjoy running, jigsaw puzzles, baking and everything Disney. Few things bring me more joy than helping a reader find the right book for them!
