Before COVID-19 and quarantine, I was not confident in my abilities in the kitchen. I was able to make the occasional cake or sweet treat for a special occasion, but I was terribly nervous and insecure when it came to cooking a complete meal. As a happily single, child-free woman, I’m immensely privileged in that I was able to use my additional time at home throughout the pandemic to learn things I previously hadn’t had time to apply myself to, and cooking was at the very top of my priority list. With the help of a meal subscription service (Specifically, Chef’s Plate, for my fellow Canadians!) I was able to start slowly, using their recipes and pre-portioned ingredients without stepping too far outside my comfort zone, or trying too much, too quickly.
Over the last few months I’ve learned so much about cooking and about myself. I know I can now trust in my abilities, and even if/when things go disastrously wrong, there’s always another chance to try again. Perhaps even more importantly, I’ve learned that as gratifying as it is to cook a successful dish, there’s nothing more satisfying than sharing it with someone else, and seeing them enjoy it, too. I can’t describe the pride and joy I feel in sharing what I create with others, both inside and outside the kitchen, and I think this is something we all experience in our lives.
With American Thanksgiving on the horizon, and Canadian Thanksgiving only just having passed in October, I thought it might be fun to celebrate my newfound love of cooking with a recommendation guide that highlights young adult books that feature food, cooking and baking.
