Two years ago, the aliens made contact. Now Cara Sweeney is going to be sharing a bathroom with one of them.

Handpicked to host the first-ever L’eihr exchange student, Cara thinks her future is set. Not only does she get a free ride to her dream college, she’ll have inside information about the mysterious L’eihrs that every journalist would kill for. Cara’s blog following is about to skyrocket.

Still, Cara isn’t sure what to think when she meets Aelyx. Humans and L’eihrs have nearly identical DNA, but cold, infuriatingly brilliant Aelyx couldn’t seem more alien. She’s certain about one thing, though: no human boy is this good-looking.

But when Cara’s classmates get swept up by anti-L’eihr paranoia, Midtown High School suddenly isn’t safe anymore. Threatening notes appear in Cara’s locker, and a police officer has to escort her and Aelyx to class.

Cara finds support in the last person she expected. She realizes that Aelyx isn’t just her only friend; she’s fallen hard for him. But Aelyx has been hiding the truth about the purpose of his exchange, and its potentially deadly consequences. Soon Cara will be in for the fight of her life — not just for herself and the boy she loves, but for the future of her planet.

Not many people know this about me, but I’ve always had a bit of a thing for aliens. Having grown up watching Roswell and The X-Files, I’ve had a profound fascination with those that aren’t from this world for as long as I can remember. There’s just something about the interplay between the alien and the human race that I’ve always found interesting (and more than a little romantic!) Plus, I absolutely love that fact that Cara, the protagonist, is a blogger! Is there anything better than a main character you can really relate to? February 4th can’t get here soon enough.

This week’s Waiting on Wednesday is brought to you by Roswell, a television show that dominated my adolescence and helped to inspire this week’s choice, or otherwise known as “How I Learned To Stop Worrying And Love The Alien Next Door”.

    1. Thanks, Jen!

I must admit that ordinarily I’m a little wary of protagonists who are book bloggers as there are times when it can seem a little like pandering to your audience, but I really love the fact that Cara is interested in pursuing a career in journalism as that was an idea I toyed with myself when I was her age. It’ll be interesting to see how that affects her relationship with Aelyx!

  1. Roswell is the best <3 And the reason I'm addicted to American TV Shows… 😀

The book sounds interesting…might check it out.

    1. If I’m being honest, the cover was what initially attracted me to this novel as well. I found it while putting together an upcoming edition of Do! Judge A Book By Its Cover, and was hooked the instant I read that it was about aliens. I have such a weakness for this sort of story and can only hope it will live up to my expectations! 😀

    1. I tried to read Gravity a couple of weeks ago and was simply unable to get through it 🙁 I desperately wanted to like it, particularly as I knew you were a fan, but I found it a little dull. I’ve placed it back on the shelf for now and will likely try again in a few months time when I’m more in the ‘mood’.

Having never read Gravity in its entirety I have no idea how close Alienated is to it, but hopefully it’s all a simple coincidence.

        1. Will do!

I do tend to be a bit of a ‘mood reader’, so it’s entirely possible that I’ll enjoy Gravity more when I attempt to read it again at a later date. I tend to give every book more than one chance just in case it’s simply a case of ‘right book, wrong time’. It really does sound like something I would enjoy so I’m determined not to give up on it just yet! 😉

Hi! I’m Jen! I’m a thirty-something introvert who loves nothing more than the cozy comfort of home and snuggling my two rescue cats, Pepper and Pancakes. I also enjoy running, jigsaw puzzles, baking and everything Disney. Few things bring me more joy than helping a reader find the right book for them!
